Clinics & Services

At Bridgegate Medical Centre we provide various clinics and services. You can find out more below - or please contact the surgery if you have any other questions not covered here.

The practice nurse holds an immunisation clinic on Tuesday between 2pm and 3.45pm. The doctors at this practice fully support the giving of MMR vaccines and strongly advise that all children are immunised in accordance with local and national guidelines.

An appointment will be sent to you for your baby's six week check, which will be carried out by one of the doctors here in the surgery.

If you have a heart or lung problem, asthma, diabetes, a carer, or are in ill health, you are advised to have a flu injection every year. Clinics are held in October/November when vaccine becomes available.

Our practice nurses are able to advise on all health matters for foreign travel. Please ask for a travel form at least two months before your planned journey. Rabies and Japenese Encephalitis vaccination is not available under the NHS and a charge must therefore be made.

Due to a medical safety alert from an aviation trained doctor, the surgery no longer prescribes sedating drugs called Benzodiazepines (Diazepam, Lorazepam, Temazepam, or Midazolam) for the use of fear of flying.

The decision has been made to put our patient’s safety first by following this safety guidance and no longer provide prescriptions for Benzodiazepines for the following reasons:

  • The use of Benzodiazepines cause longer reaction times and slowed thinking, which during a flight will put the passenger at significant risk of not being able to act in a manner which could save their life in the event of a safety critical scenario.
  • The use of Benzodiazepines has the potential to increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
  • The sedating effects can reduce respiratory function which has the potential to be life threatening – even more so if there is a combination with alcohol.
  • There is the possibility of increased aggression from patients taking Benzodiazepines and therefore the potential to put other occupants of the aircraft at risk.
  • Benzodiazepines are not recommended for those people with phobic states

In some countries it is illegal to import these drugs and so the passenger will need to use a different strategy for the homeward bound journey and/or any subsequent legs of the journey. These are run by several major airlines and sometimes by local airports.
Patients who have a fear of flying are encouraged to research fear of flying courses. These are run by several major airlines and sometimes by local airports.

The doctors do undertake minor surgery procedures in surgery. Please ask at reception for further details.

A full range of family planning care and advice is available from all the doctors and nurses in the practice. Appointments can be made at reception.

Appointments for smear tests can be booked with our practice nurses or, if preferred, with one of the doctors. We operate a call and recall system and all our female patients between the age of 25 and 64 will be sent reminders to attend for this investigation.

These are held on Thursdays. Please contact the surgery for more information.
We are pleased to see antenatal/postnatal patients. Our district midwife is also in attendance.

For patients between the ages of 16 and 75 registered with the practice and have not had a consultation in the preceding 3 years, you can request a consultation and the doctor will provide appropriate services.

If you are aged over 75, registered with the practice and have not had a consultation in the preceding 12 months, you can request a consultation and the doctor will carry this out in the most appropriate location.

This check is part of a new national scheme to help prevent the onset of health problems. Everyone between the ages of 40 and 74 who has not been diagnosed with the conditions mentioned below will be invited for a check once every five years. If you would like to make an appointment please contact the receptionist for more information.

If you are outside the age range and are concerned about your health you should contact your GP:

  • heart disease
  • type 2 diabetes
  • kidney disease
  • stroke
